Try http://www.petfinder.com. You can find various pure and mixed breeds from shelters and rescues. The adoption fees vary, but are usually no more than a couple hundred dollars.

You are not looking for an AKC registered show dog so my best advice is to go the shelter and give a fuzzy little buddy a new home. Many dogs in ads or at pet stores come from Puppy Mills, awful places. You will have plenty of cash left over for vet bills and doggie bling if you go with a rescue puppy.
My Brother and his wife found a beautiful labmix and a purebred boxer at the ASPCA near Mesquite. Please do yourself and all dogkind a favor and look into rescue. Here is the Texas ASPCA site;
