What Materials Are Good For Sewing Your Own Female Fantasy/Comic/Video Game Costumes?
I’m no sewing-expert, nor I have any good experience with sewing (Maybe a little bit in school) but I’m curious- what sort of materials do people use to sew costumes? And by costumes, I don’t mean those cheap renting costumes, I mean what those female fantasy/comic/video game characters wear such as Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Black Cat, Poison Ivy, Batgirl, etc. Do they wear the cotton type or those swimsuit kinda fabric? Is it easy to make? Please elaborate more. I’m excited to hear about it.

Updated note: Thanks for the feedback. What about the swimsuit materials? What is it called and is it useful to create a real catsuit-like costumes like in the comics?

Obviously the type of fabric would depend on the look you’re going for. The batgirl costume would most likely be a lycra-cotton blend – which can be difficult to work with because you have to make sure you don’t stretch the material as you sew it. Catwoman costumes would most likely be a leather or imitation leather, which because of its thickness is more like a pain to sew. Non-stretch cotton and cotton-blends tend to be easier to work with, but for people who are serious about the costume – they won’t use them because they don’t look as good.
It would depend on what type of costume you are making.

I think if would depend on what you want the costumes to do. But my first guess would be something stretchy and washable. Like maybe a lycra blend. Something similar to what dancers (ballet) costumes are made out of. Breathable, bendable but comfortable.
Some swimsuits are lycra, some are spandex, some are stretch cotton, some are polyester.
The costume really does determine what type fabric you want to use. If you want a catwoman outfit, you may consider a pleather type of material, or even a vinyl.
Search for Ural Gear-Up Model. I’m doing Neo-Soviet. Are
still researching field uniforms and equipment. Expect to do
wool blends for single-piece suit over polypropylene single-
piece. Black for both. Winter camo of white and mud brown
water/wind resistant smock will cover rider. Will not carry
armaments. Have an Oregon boot maker making Russian
leather wear. Have purchased sewing machine designed for
sail canvass and heavy fabric.
