What is with Christians and Halloween?
Just a question for Christians about Halloween…
I have two neighbors who are Christian. One told me that they do not celebrate Halloween, because it’s against their religion. However, they did carve pumpkins and their daughter dressed up as a cheerleader and came knocking on my door for candy last Halloween.
My other neighbor also said they don’t celebrate because of their religion. When one of the kids came out and saw me putting up my decorations, his father put his hand over his eyes and told him that if he looked at my decorations, he would let the devil into his soul. Extreme huh? But, not to worry, two weeks later, on Halloween, his kids put on Spiderman and Transformers costumes and came knocking on my door for candy.
So, my question is – if Christians aren’t supposed to celebrate this all American-ized holiday of Halloween, then why do they still dress up put their hands out for candy?
Please note that I said the "all American-ized" Halloween. I know the Pagan origins of Halloween. But, I am referring to the commercialized celebration we have here, today.

Same reason they celebrate Easter with chocolate bunnies and colored eggs. WTF do egg laying bunnies have to do with the the Resurrection?
Well they try to say they are against it because it’s a Pagan holiday but then the kids get the better of them. They should just loosen up and realize that trick-or-treat has nothing to do with Paganism.
it’s pagan… therefore of the devil… therefore must be stopped…. damn others religious rights, damn them to hell.
Children can be part of a religion no more than they can be part of a political party.
Peer pressure at school for the children, plus it’s free candy.
This beside the fact that Halloween is absolutely, freaking AWESOME! What other time to you get to see women dressed up as "naughty" whatever and be encouraged to look at them. ;-p
Mainly because organised religions SUCK big time, full of hatred, repressions, and of course the really big one, hypocrisy…. I guess your neighbours are full of confusions because Halloween is a truly pagan celebration.

To me, Halloween is just another of those minor Hallmark holidays I don’t have to bother myself with now that my kids are grown and gone, especially since there are no kids in my neighborhood. The Americanized version is just harmless fun, and I say if the Pagans wish to celebrate it as a religious holiday, by all means let them have at it. I pay it about as much attention as I do Ramadan and Yom Kippur.
Christianity is about removing spiritual knowledge and our origional pagan holidays and practices. Halloween is a pagan holiday that is pretty much intact so its no wonder they want to get rid of it.
I love Halloween! It’s a time where I can set my evil spirits free to do my bidding! Christan’s are just dumb and don’t want little children to have fun.
@skippy
Nothing. They’re pagan! Bunnies and eggs are signs of fertility that have to do with Ostara. Even a "Christmas" tree is pagan. It has nothing to do with the birth of Jesus. Evergreen is associated with Yule!
Its not an All American holiday, its roots are back in the UK where poor people use to go begging for food, from the wealthy.
They used to dress up to pacify the demons, All Amercans have done is make it a huge commercial event.

I am Christian and it’s that many other Christians are still clinging to what Halloween originally was. (Since you know of the origins of Halloween that speeds things up). Many Christians are not able to see that Halloween has changed and its a completely new concept. Many people need to stop holding onto the past and see it’s a whole to ball game. It’s like a baseball player who has been teleported to the future only to find baseball is now played like soccer. The baseball player refuses to play baseball now because he won’t acknowledge that baseball is now like soccer.
They do seem rather confused. If they, like you, have swallowed the urban myth about pagan origins or believe it is something to do with Satan, then they should have nothing to do with it. They would be mistaken but at least acting in accord with their beliefs.
If, however, they knew the actual history – its origins in the Christian feast of All Saints (All Hallows – All Hallows Eve – Hallowe’en) – they mght behave differently. If they knew how for centuries Christians (particularly Catholics) have had it as a time to celebrate the lives of good people who have lived before and, the following day – All Souls, to remember and pray for their loved ones who have died.
Sadly, Christians – those who were anti-Catholic – were responsible for this myth about paganism and Satan which has lead to the peculiar festival that Hallowe’en has become in the USA. In most Catholic countries and in many others – Mexico, Latin America, Spain, Italy, the Phillipines, Hungary, Sweden etc – it remains a day of Christian reverence and remembrance.
