I can only speak for myself, and I’m not Chinese. It seems as though it would seem a tribute rather than an insult, knowing that you appreciated their culture enough to purchase such lovely apparel. Are you good enough friends with those of Chinese heritage who will be at the party? If they are thinking of the party as a "costume party" and not an opportunity to see how scary you can dress, they should not be offended and might even offer some advice on your outfits. If you’re close friends, ask what they think, and whatever their answer it would be an opportunity to compliment them and express your admiration of their culture and dress.

I don’t see why it would be. You’re not trying to insult their culture. It’s Halloween, a time to dress up in something you wouldn’t normally wear. I think it’s a good idea to be honest.

Halloween is a time for being something you’re not. You and your family are not even being offensive, you guys could have taken the chinese costumes to a way higher level of politically incorrectness. I don’t think your friends will be offended unless they are the kind of people who take everything so seriously.

No, it’s pretty much okay.
Halloween’s a time to do stuff like that.
But sumo IS NOT Chinese, it is a strictly Japanese tradition.

we are going through a similar problem at my school. You see, we’re called the Indians. we recently got an Indian mascot with a caricature mask of an Indian. While no one was offended about having an Indian mascot, it was the caricature stereotype which offended many. I personally think that everything there is fine except for the sumo wrestler outfit (besides that’s Japanese ) I hope I helped. However, I’m not of Chinese heritage, so I wouldn’t know whether it would offend me.

I think It is a good idea but I think that you shouldn’t have your toddler be a sumo it might be a little bit offensive. I don’t think it is offensive but Its better safe then sorry.

my question about a costume is politically incorrect. as long as you dont wear fake beaver teeth and you dont talk with an accent…or tape your eyes you havent crossed the line.
