How do you break in cowboy boots with wooden outsoles?

I just bought a pair of cowboy boots that have wood at the bottom (outsoles), not on the heel but on the toe part. I was wondering how i could make them a little rougher so i won’t slip and if there is a way to make them more supple for walking/dancing.
