Halloween?

I don’t get the point of Halloween. I mean I know the kids want the candy but can’t they just buy 2 boxes of candy. And what’s up with the costume. I just think Halloween is kind of dumb don’t you?

I think it’s far from being dumb. Originally it was a holiday celebrated by non-Christian peoples. Then the church decided to use an already exsisting holidy to better convert people to Christianity. They realized it would be easier to convert people by keeping their celebrations in place but telling them instead of what it once meant it now meant something else. Then over time the church forgot that All Saints Day was at one time called Hallowsmas (Hallows being another name for Saints and All Hallowsmas being the Feast of the Hallows) and the evening before was All Hallowsmas Eve. Hallowsmas Eve became Hallows Even, then Halloweve, then Hallowe’en, and finally Halloween.
And until the late 1800s – early 1900s Halloween was largely a holiday for adults. Slowly adult parties faded into obscurity while childrens parties became more popular. However, pranks also became something of a concern. To keep kids from pulling pranks that might be of a destructive manner, around the 1930s the idea of allowing kids to go door to door trick or treating arose both as a way to bring communities together and to keep as many kids out of trouble as possible. The trick or treating came from the idea of people going door to door for soul cakes. No longer are soul cakes offered, today they have become candy. But trick or treating is still a throw back of going door to door seeking soul cakes.
The baby boomer generation is being touted with helping to bring Halloween back as now being as much an adult’s holiday as it is a children’s holiday. As they grew up many did not wish to stop experincing Halloween. Gone would be the trick or treating, but the dressing up for Halloween remained thanks to costume parties and such Slowly the baby boomers, and the generatations that have followed, have helped to rekindle Halloween as an adult holiday.
i like it as you can see
It’s the fun of it sure you can buy 2 boxes of candy but wheres the fun in that?
it was originally created to ward off the evil spirits, and everyone would dress scary. they did it once a year to make sure the evil spirits wouldn’t visit them that year.
obviously, its adapted a lot since then.
First of all, because its fun and candy tastes good. Secondly, it used to be some kind of festival that developed into what it is now. check it this website
I love Halloween. It’s a historical tradition that was started a really long time ago and just got out of controll.
"Halloween originated under the name of Samhain as a Pagan festival among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries have embraced the holiday as a part of American pop culture in the late twentieth century." Wikipedia
and people can buy their own presents at christmas and their birthday and on thanksgiving we can eat normal meals, nothing special and on easter we don’t hide the eggs so we don’t have to look for them and why bother buying model cars, just buy the ones already assembled and if noone ever competes in sports noone ever loses and so on and so on……. think its dumb? then stay home with your porch light out.
Halloween is a lot of fun, it’s great to see kids out dressed up and running around as their favorite character or scary monster.
Halloween or Samhain is actually the festival of the harvest, the Celtic New Year. It is a time to celebrate the previous year and be with friends and family.
Halloween started as much more than dressing up, ringing doorbells and pigging out on candy. It was originally called All Hallows Eve. Put it in a search on google, and you’ll get loads of info.
I love it! We decorate like its xmas.
I like Halloween, its fun to have the one day a year where you can dress up as anything as you want. I enjoy the whole month of October its a nice theme.
It’s the fun in getting to go beyond the boundaries of normal childhood for a night. Getting to go out at night and wander the neighborhood, getting to be the scary thing instead of being scared of what’s out there, getting to GET two bags of candy and having your parents allow it. It’s all about fun and playing pretend in a fully adult sanctioned event.
It is dumb now but to little kids it fun to play pretend to be someone else even if its just a few hours and getting to know your neighbors and getting loads of candy.
I LOVE Halloween… maybe it was just never special enough for you.. To me, it’s fun. Was fun to go trick or treating as a kid, and now fun to do up my yard and have a good time with that. I have a whole little shed full of my "toys" (props). And thanks to cool stuff in some stores and QVC…have added to it yet again. And I LOVE old vintage style decorations. (Hey, everyone has a vice, at least mine is just a once a year thing.)
What’s funner than dressing up as somthing you aren’t and going to random people’s houses where they try to guess what you are dressed up as and then getting candy after thay say you look cute in your costume?
Well, I guess it’s just fun for the kids (and some adults too). In my family, we always had an Easter egg hunt at Easter. Yes, we could have just had a box of eggs and eaten them, but it’s so much more fun to go and find them! But the thing that bothers me about Halloween is the way kids go and knock on people’s doors asking for candy – even if they are strangers. There are so many sick people out there, you don’t know what they might do. Most of the time, parents tell their children not to talk to or accept food from strangers. Yet at Halloween, they encourage it!
being a christian , i personally do not celebrate halloween as far as the whole scarey ghouly side goes
i instead buy some candy for my kids, put it out in bowls. play a wholesome game of amen or uno, and have a dvd running
i still let my kids run around in costumes in the house, but they are usually simple costumes. like this year is a black cat.
I just let them celebrate the change in season and beauty of fall, i dont really thing celebrating death, and scaring the heck out of people is profitable for anyone to do
where is the fun in buying your own candy???? i like halloween because its the one day of the year where you can forget who you are and be someone else just for the fun of it…and how many times a year is it acceptable to scare the crap out of people like your younger sibilings (i think i spelled that wrong) but the point is its nice to pretend your another person or thing just to walk door to door, to beg for candy in trade of not being tricked, in someone elses shoes.
Uh…what?
Well okay, it’s not for everyone. It used to be for me until… One year I rented an Alien costume (from the Sigourney Weaver Alien movie) and people kept stepping on my tail, NOT FUN. Then the next year I dressed as a Vulcan (from Star Trek) and my right ear kept falling off, annoying. People kept saying I keep getting an ear full. After that I never dressed up again. I still like telling kids they scare me.
Halloween is fun, lighten up a little.
everyone is entitled to their opinion…….but at my house and throughout our neighborhood it is like a small carnival and people come from all over to visit. all of us have a great time entertaining and enjoy seeing the reactions on the many faces that visit.it is all worth the effort to see people with their children having fun and that is what it is all about!!!
happy halloween!!!!!!!!
